Uppada Weaving of Andhra Pradesh
A distinctive feature of the Uppada sari is that it is woven so that the pattern is visible on both sides of the sari. Many Uppada saris are preferred by women for special occasions. The Uppada silk sari was so popular that the Uppada weavers were recognized by the Government of India and awarded the Presidential Citation in 1972.
Process of Uppada Saree
Weaving the Upada silk sari takes between 10 and 60 days, requiring at least 23 weavers to spend 10 hours a day. The weavers use pure lace (silver dipped in molten gold as well as some of the finest silks in the Bangalore region). Saree weaving includes design layouts, silk weaving, weaving, and more.
