History of Unique Channapatna Wooden Craft

Channapatna wood craft is the most famous wooden artefact that is a unique form of crafting that makes use of wood to make items like dolls, toys, and other beautiful pieces of items. Channapatna is a two-century-old craft that was initiated in the 18th century by Tipu Sultan.

It is said that an invitation was extended to Persian artsmen to impart this unique form of art to the locals. For nearly a century, Ivory wood (Aale Mara) was used in the making of these toys and later, woods like teak, sandalwood, rubber, rosewood, and other forms of wood were used. The father of Channapatna Toys, Bavas Miyan, based the manufacturing of these wooden toys on Japanese technology and dedicated his time to learning the craft and training artisans who were interested in this Indian craft.

Process of Channapatna Handicrafts

There are different stages in the process of Channapatna crafts work which we’re going to be looking at.

1. The first step in this process is to look for the type of wood that will be used for the craft. Woods like pine, ivory, sandalwood, etc. are searched for.
   
   
2. The wood is then seasoned and air-dried. This will help reduce the moisture content of the wood and increase its durability.
   
   
3. The wood is then cut and moulded into the desired sizes and shapes. It is later carved to perfection. (This step was done manually before, but today machines are used).
   
   
4. The semi-finished Channapatna products are checked for and smoothened using sandpaper. It is then shaped and polished to give it that glossy appearance.
   
   
5. The pieces are then painted with natural colours to make the product non-toxic, eco-friendly, and safe for children.
