Origin of Maheshwari Silk

The Maheshwari sari is named after Maheshwar, a city in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone area. Silk thread is used to make the sari. The Hindu group provides the yarn for the sari, and the Muslim community weaves the Maheshwari sari, which is a distinctive aspect of its manufacture. The end outcome of the entire procedure is the two communities coming together.

According to folklore, Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar commissioned a special nine-yard sari that could be offered as a gift to her family and guests at the palace from a special group of weavers from Surat and Malwa. When Her Highness designed the first Maheshwari saree, they quickly became extremely famous in royal and aristocratic circles.

The complex designs and glitter of the sari were previously enhanced by the weavers using gold or silver threads and gemstones. However, copper-coated nylon wires have taken the place of zari in modern times, and slow natural colouring is no longer as common due to manufacturing time restrictions.

Women adore these saris for their lightweight design and shiny sheen. Maheshwari sarees are now made of cotton, silk cotton, and even wool, despite having only ever been made of silk in the past. This light and airy fabric retain the silk's gentle lustre thanks to the fine cotton threads in its weft and the silk in its warp. A Maheshwari sari's pallu (edge), which is decorated in vibrant hues like maroon, magenta, pink, green, and mauve, is its most intriguing feature.

FAQs

What is special about the Maheshwari saree?

A Maheshwari saree's reversible border makes it special. Both sides of the saree can be worn because of the way the border is made. Locally, this is referred to as Bugdi.

Which is better, Chanderi or Maheshwari?

Chanderi sarees contain many motifs and are often flowery in style, whilst Maheshwari sarees have more linear patterns and fewer embellishments. Chanderi sarees have the design generated on the weft, but Maheshwari sarees have the design formed on the warp from the very beginning, with the weft remaining unchanged.

Where is Maheshwari's saree from?

The elegant Maheshwari saree was first created in Madhya Pradesh's Maheshwar in the 18th century. Originally fashioned of only pure silk, cotton yarn was added to the weft of these sarees over time.

How to care for Maheshwari saree?

For the first few times, dry cleaning should be used on all styles of Maheshwari saree. A moderate detergent and cold water should then be used to hand wash the cotton Maheshwari saree. Squeezing the water out gently works just as well as wringing the saree.
