Some fabrics just make life easier. Plain fabric is one of them. No print to match, no pattern to worry about, just clean solid cloth that you can turn into pretty much anything you want. A kurta for women, a dress for women, a dupatta, even a simple home project. The fabric stays out of the way and lets the actual garment take the spotlight.
At iTokri the plain fabric collection is put together keeping this in mind. Good quality material that works whether you are an experienced tailor or someone just starting out with stitching at home.
Not all plain fabrics are the same and that is something worth knowing before you buy. The same colour in cotton versus silk will look and feel completely different. Here is a rough idea of what each one is like.
Plain Cotton Fabrics that are soft, easy to stitch, does not cause any trouble. The kind of fabric you reach for without thinking twice,Plain Silk Fabric that has that slight shine to it. Feels smooth and drapes in a way cotton simply cannot. A bit more care needed but worth it, Plain Linen Fabric that are slightly textured and a little stiff at first but it settles beautifully. It gets better with every wash honestly,Plain Silk Materials that are lighter than regular silk. Good when you want something that flows without feeling heavy on the body,Plain Black Fabric that goes with everything. One of those safe choices that actually works,Plain White Fabrics that are clean, classic, and a good base if you want to add any kind of work to the fabric later.
Cotton is the fabric most Indian households run on and that is not an exaggeration. It is everywhere because it genuinely works. Plain cotton specifically is something else though because without a print taking up attention the fabric quality becomes the whole thing.
● Most comfortable option for daily wear especially in warmer months
● Does not feel heavy or irritating even after wearing it all day
● Stitches well into kurtas, salwar suits and casual dresses
● Wash it, dry it, wear it again. Very low maintenance
For anyone living in a warm climate plain cotton fabric is one purchase that will keep coming in handy.
There is something about silk that just looks expensive. Even a simple straight cut kurta in plain silk looks like you put a lot of effort in when honestly the fabric is doing most of the work. That is what makes it such a good investment.
● Naturally smooth surface that works really well for festive and occasion wear
● Sarees, blouses, dupattas, evening dresses, it handles all of these well
● Colours look much deeper and richer on silk than they do on cotton
● If you ever want to add embroidery or any embellishment silk holds it beautifully
Plain silk material from iTokri is a solid choice if you are planning something for a wedding or any kind of special occasion.
Linen has had a bit of a moment recently and it makes sense. People are tired of stiff formal fabrics but also want something that looks more put together than a regular cotton tee. Linen fits right in the middle of that.
● Has a natural texture that makes outfits look relaxed but still intentional
● Works very well for shirts, tunics, loose pants and fusion silhouettes
● Comfortable enough for a full day of wearing without feeling like you are in a formal outfit
● One thing people do not expect is how much softer it gets after a few washes
If you like a more contemporary Indian aesthetic plain linen fabric is one to try.
With plain fabrics the colour you pick basically is the outfit. There is no print to distract from it so choosing well matters more here than anywhere else.
Plain Black Fabric
Probably the most reliable option there is. Works for casual, works for formal, works for everything in between. Hard to go wrong with it.
Plain White Fabric
Classic for a reason. Also one of the best bases for embroidery or block printing if you want to add something to it later.
Neutral tones
Beige, grey, earthy browns. These are the ones that layer well and pair easily with almost any printed dupatta.
Bright solid colours
A strong orange or cobalt blue in a good quality plain fabric can make a simple silhouette look really striking. No print needed.
Quite a lot actually. The lack of print makes plain fabric surprisingly flexible in terms of what you can do with it.
● Kurtas and salwar suits for daily wear and office
● Dresses and tunics that look clean and minimal
● Blouses and dupattas that pair with printed sarees without competing
● Shirts and contemporary pieces for a more modern wardrobe
● Home projects, cushion covers, craft work, small DIY textile things
Because there is no print to work around cutting and stitching plain fabric is also a lot less stressful.
This is where people get stuck and honestly it is understandable. You cannot feel the fabric before it arrives. A few things that help narrow it down.
● Start with the end product. What are you making? That decides the fabric type more than anything else.
● Check fabric weight if it is mentioned. Lighter weight for flowy pieces, heavier for something structured.
● Plain fabrics show their actual colour more accurately in photos than printed ones so the images are fairly reliable.
● Read the full product description. Usually tells you about texture, finish and care.
● For silk, especially check whether dry cleaning is recommended before buying.
iTokri usually has detailed descriptions on each product so most of these questions get answered before checkout.
There are other places to buy plain fabric online but a few things about iTokri make it stand out.
● Good range across cotton, silk and linen in different weights and finishes
● Fabrics are picked carefully so quality is generally consistent
● Product descriptions are detailed enough that you are not buying completely blind
● Works for tailoring at home as well as larger projects
● New additions come in regularly so the collection stays fresh
Plain fabrics are easy to care for once you know the basics for each type. Getting this wrong especially with silk can be frustrating.
Plain Cotton Fabric
Cold water wash is fine, machine or hand both work. Mild detergent, dry in shade. Nothing complicated.
Plain Silk Fabric
Hand wash only, gently, cold water, mild soap. Do not twist or wring it. Lay flat to dry in shade. Iron on low with a cloth between the iron and fabric.
Plain Linen Fabric
Hand wash or a gentle machine cycle works. It will wrinkle, that is just linen being linen. Iron damp for best results or just let it be, the wrinkles are part of the look.
One thing that applies to all of them
The first few washes keep dark colours separate. Store folded fabric away from direct sunlight otherwise colours start looking dull faster than they should.
