The word Phulkari comes from Punjabi, where "phul" means flower and "kari" means work. The Process of Phulkari Hand Embroidery
Traditional Phulkari embroidery uses pat, an untwisted floss silk thread, worked in a long and short darning stitch counted along the weave of the base cloth. The embroiderer stitches largely from the reverse, so the floss catches the light on the front and the flowers seem to glow. On these sarees the hand embroidery sits on fine Chanderi silk, Chinon silk, or georgette, so the weight of a wedding saree comes with the softness of a drape you can actually wear.
