● Step 1. Bleaching the Fabric

The raw cotton or silk is washed thoroughly in river water to remove all starch and sizing from the cloth. Then it is soaked in a solution of myrobalan, a fruit from the Terminalia chebula tree that acts as a natural mordant, and then sun dried completely. This step opens the fibres so they will accept natural dye permanently.

● Step 2. Treating with Buffalo Milk

The myrobalan treated fabric is then soaked in a mixture of buffalo milk and myrobalan again and dried in the sun. Buffalo milk contains proteins and fats that coat the individual fibres and prevent colour from bleeding or spreading during painting. This is what gives authentic Srikalahasti Kalamkari its characteristic clean paint lines. It is also why genuine pieces have a faint raw milk smell when you first receive them. The artist traces over the charcoal sketch with this kalam to create permanent outlines. This is the defining step of Srikalahasti Pen Kalamkari. ● Step 5. First Wash

The alum treated areas pick up the dye and the untreated areas resist it. The depth of the red depends on how long the fabric stays in the dye bath and how much alum was applied.

● Step 7. Second Wash

The fabric is washed again in river water to remove excess dye and fix the red permanently. Sun dried again completely before the next colour goes in. Every colour requires its own wash and dry cycle. This is not a shortcut step. Skipping it results in colours bleeding into each other and the clean colour separation that defines genuine Kalamkari is lost.

● Step 8. Filling Yellow and Green

Yellow is made from pomegranate peel boiled with alum and sometimes mango bark. Green is produced by first applying myrobalan and then overdyeing with indigo to produce a natural green tone. These colours go into the relevant sections using the second kalam reserved for colour filling which has a slightly broader tip than the outlining kalam.

● Step 9. Indigo Dyeing for Blue

The entire fabric is submerged in an indigo vat for blue areas. Indigo is a reduction dye meaning the cloth looks greenish when it comes out of the vat and only turns blue when exposed to air as it oxidises. The non-blue sections of the fabric are covered or treated with wax resist before dipping to protect the already completed red and yellow areas from picking up the indigo.

● Step 10. Final Wash and Sun Drying

The completed painted fabric goes through a final wash in clean water, sometimes in running river water traditionally, and is then dried in the sun. This last wash removes any remaining loose dye and gives the colours their final settled appearance.
