Dharwad Weaving of Karnataka

This style was born in the 7th century in the western part of Karnataka in the Dharwad region. This is the true origin of the name Dharwad Sarees. The name has a very Kannada feel that means cotton. This literally means handmade from cotton thread. Its embroidery design has its origins in the Ikat sari, a variety of cotton sari found in the Ikat region. The tradition was to give the bride a blue embroidered cotton sari. This was later extended to silk varieties. Today, many silk sari and pulses are stabbed with Kasuti embroidery.
