Chikankari is a white-on-white hand embroidery from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, dating back to the Mughal era. It uses 36 types of stitches to create floral motifs on fine cotton or muslin. GI tagged.
How long does Chikankari embroidery take?
The block printer first stamps the pattern on fabric. The embroiderer then follows the printed outline using one of 36 recognized stitches. After completion, the block print is washed away, leaving only the embroidery.
How can I tell if the embroidery is hand-done?
Hand embroidery has a slightly irregular stitch pattern on the reverse side. Machine embroidery shows perfectly uniform stitches. The texture and depth of hand stitching is visibly different.
Will the threads pull or snag during use?
Handle embroidered areas gently. Avoid rubbing against rough surfaces. If a thread catches, don't pull. push it back gently with a needle. Proper care keeps the embroidery intact for years.

Handloom Voile has a distinct texture. slightly uneven, with a softer hand-feel. It's woven on manual looms with natural yarn tension. Mul cotton is uniform but lacks that organic character.
