Frequently Asked Questions
Will the enamel paint chip or scratch off easily?
+

No. Unlike surface acrylic paint, enamel is raw glass fused directly to metal at intense heat. This creates a hard, scratch-resistant coating that retains its mirror-like shine for years without peeling or flaking.

Are copper enamel rakhis heavy on the wrist?
+

Not at all. The central copper bases are lightweight (weighing under 8 grams) and mounted on soft, skin-friendly cotton dori or silk patwa threads for comfortable, all-day wear.

Buy Handmade Enamel Work & Meenakari Rakhi on iTokri

Give your brother a thread that sparkles with everlasting brilliance. Our Enamel Work Rakhis bridge centuries-old metalcraft with vibrant, modern aesthetics. Created by fusing powdered glass onto copper or brass at temperatures exceeding 800°C, these handcrafted enamel dials (traditionally known as Meenakari) feature a glossy, scratch-resistant finish that never fades, tarnishes, or loses its luster. From sacred spiritual iconography to cheeky pop-culture motifs, these metallic keepsakes offer a luxurious, long-lasting alternative to disposable plastic rakhis.

The Alchemy of Copper Enameling & Meenakari

Enamel work is one of India's most celebrated heritage metalcrafts. Powdered glass pigments are carefully hand-painted onto a solid metal base and fired in a high-temperature kiln. The heat melts the glass powder, permanently fusing it to the metal surface.

Process of Making Handmade Copper Enamel Rakhi

1. Shaping the Copper Base

Upcycled or sheet copper is cut into geometric, floral, or custom shapes. The raw edges are filed down and smoothed to prepare a clean canvas.

2. Acid Cleaning & Pickling

The shaped copper pieces are washed in a mild acid solution (pickling) to remove surface oxidation, grease, and dirt so the glass powder can adhere seamlessly.

3. Applying Glass Powder & Pigments

Artisans hand-apply fine vitreous glass powder mixed with a natural binder using delicate brushes, stencils, or dry sifting to create intricate colors and patterns.

4. High-Heat Kiln Firing

The prepped metal is placed inside a high-temperature kiln at 750°C–850°C for a few minutes. The intense heat melts the glass powder, permanently fusing it to the copper surface into a hard, glossy coat.

5. Buffing & Dori Threading

Once cooled, the copper edges are buffed and polished to a shine. The finished enamel charm is then carefully strung onto soft, skin-friendly cotton or silk dori threads.

Because the color comes from vitrified glass rather than surface paint, enamel rakhis are completely waterproof, scratch-proof, and impervious to everyday wear.

The Hands Behind the Glaze: Preserving Heritage Metalcraft

A major highlight of our enamel collection is crafted in partnership with Ekibeki, a Maharashtra-based social enterprise dedicated to reviving traditional copper enameling.

By turning industrial copper scrap into high-art jewelry and festive heirlooms, Ekibeki provides sustainable, dignified income to rural metal artisans whose craft was threatened by cheap plastic imports. We also work directly with heritage Meenakars in Jaipur, preserving centuries of royal artisan traditions.
