What Is Tholu Bommalata?

Tholu Bommalata means "the dance of leather puppets." It is Andhra Pradesh's traditional leather shadow-puppet theatre, a centuries-old craft where translucent leather is cut and painted, then held up to a lamp so the coloured figures move across a screen. The same craft, shrunk down, becomes the round painted motif on this Rakhi: peacocks, flowers, and mythological figures, hand-painted on goat leather in natural colours, following techniques the region has practised for generations.

Who Makes This Rakhi

Each one is made by master artist V. Shankar from Nimmalakunta, a village in Andhra Pradesh known for Tholu Bommalata. He paints the leather by hand, so the colours and figures shift slightly from piece to piece.
