| Material | Multicolor ajrakh fabric by artisan Sufiyan Ismail Khatri is crafted using natural-dyeing and resist block-printing techniques. This ancient craft is estimated to be around 4,500 years old. The Ajrakh artisans in India originally migrated from Sindh to the Kutch region of Gujarat and to Barmer in Rajasthan. Ajrakh is also the traditional attire of the Maldhari pastoral community of Bhuj. The process is long and detailed, involving multiple stages where each layer of colour is printed only after a resting period, allowing the cloth to absorb the dye fully. Made from velvet and viscose blend, it is ideal for creating kurtas, shirts, dresses or even home decor items. A Note on Handmade Beauty: |
| Care | Dry clean only. |
| Colour | Slight difference in color from the visible product image is possible. |

Sufiyan Ismail Khatri uses traditional Ajrakh crafts to create hand-printed and naturally-dyed fabrics such as scarves, shawls, rugs, and tablecloths. Ajrakh's craft is over 4000 years old. Some traditional textiles have been found in the ruins of the city of Fostat in Egypt. Khatri comes from the Khatri community. Khatri means printer and the community is made up of artisans who do Ajrakh printing and natural dyeing. His ancestors practiced this technique on the banks of the Indus River in Sindh. For them, the ajrakh is a way of life and a means of learning. A unique feature of Ajrakh is a resist printing technique that uses gum arabic and lime paste on hand-carved blocks of wood, as well as the skillful use of wood stains and natural dyes to create natural gem-like shades that retain color.

For those of you using a 44-inch wide fabric, this guide suggests measurements for a standard L Size. Think of this as your starting point. If you're working with different sizes or fabric widths, just adjust up or down accordingly. Hope this helps!
When it comes to how much fabric you'll need, it really depends on the design. We'd recommend having a chat with your designer or tailor before you order, just to be on the safe side.

Ajrakh is a resist-printing craft from Kutch, Gujarat. It uses indigo and madder root dyes in a 16-step process. The Khatri community has practiced it for over 400 years. It holds a GI tag.
The fabric goes through repeated rounds of resist application, dyeing, washing, and sun-drying. Artisans use carved teak blocks and a mud-lime resist paste. A single piece takes up to two weeks to complete.
Look for slight irregularities in the pattern. block prints are never perfectly symmetrical. The reverse side shows faint ink marks. These small imperfections confirm it's hand-stamped, not machine-made.
Each impression is placed by hand. Block pressure, ink amount, and fabric texture create natural variations. Two pieces from the same batch will look similar but never identical.
First wash in cold water with a pinch of salt to set the dye. Always hand wash or gentle machine cycle. Dry in shade. direct sun can shift natural dye colors over time.
Velvet has a dense, plush pile you can feel when you run your fingers across it. It is soft, warm, and rich to the touch. The surface catches light differently from each angle.
Hand wash in cold water with mild wool detergent. Do not twist or wring. Lay flat on a towel to dry. Dry cleaning is recommended for heavily embroidered velvet pieces.
Primarily, yes. Velvet works best in cool and cold weather. Lighter velvet pieces can work in air-conditioned indoor settings. It's not suitable for peak summer use.
Clean before storing. Fold and place in a breathable cotton bag. Add neem leaves or naphthalene to prevent moths. Store in a dry, dark cupboard. Check every few months.
Some pilling is normal with wool and wool-blend fabrics in early use. Gently remove pills with a fabric shaver. After the initial period, the surface stabilizes and pilling reduces.
