Avani, meaning "Earth" in Sanskrit, is a community-based organization founded in 1999 by Rashmi Bharti and Rajnish Jain in the Kumaon region of the Indian Himalayas. Initially addressing the lack of electricity, Avani installed 3000 solar lights in 25 villages, pioneering a sustainable energy program. Evolving into a non-profit, Avani revitalizes traditional crafts, technology, and farm-based interventions to create livelihood opportunities. Its model integrates local expertise with global collaboration, fostering skill-based employment for rural communities. With roots in the Barefoot College, Tilonia, Avani prioritizes environmental sustainability and cultural sensitivity in every aspect of its operations. In a region devoid of industrialization, Avani serves as a beacon of opportunity, offering locally-driven, sustainable livelihoods. Today, Avani's dedicated local team, supported by volunteers worldwide, continues to enrich rural development initiatives, embodying resilience and community empowerment.
