The Dokra system of metal casting is believed to be one of the oldest known methods and is technically referred to as the cire perdue or lost-wax process. In this technique, wax is replaced by molten metal through a traditional hollow-casting method. This highly intricate and time-intensive process is still practiced in various tribal regions of India, especially in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, where the legacy of Dokra artistry continues to thrive.
