Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ikat fabric exactly?
+

In Ikat, the threads are tied and dyed before weaving even begins. Once those dyed threads go on the loom, the pattern slowly forms as the weaving happens. Nothing is printed on the surface, the design is built into the fabric itself.

Why do the patterns look slightly blurry at the edges?
+

Because real Ikat is woven from pre-dyed threads and getting every thread to align perfectly by hand is nearly impossible. That soft feathered effect around the motifs is actually one of the easiest ways to recognise genuine Ikat. Sharp perfect edges usually mean it's printed.

The colours bled in the first wash. Is that normal?
+

Yes, especially with brighter or darker shades. First wash bleeding is common in Ikat fabrics. Wash separately in cold water the first couple of times and it settles down after that.

Some parts of the pattern don't line up perfectly. Defect?
+

Not at all. Slight misalignment at repeat joins is part of handwoven Ikat. The entire technique depends on dyed threads lining up during weaving and small shifts naturally happen. Machine perfect alignment throughout usually points to a print, not real Ikat.

How many metres do I need for a saree?
+

5.5 metres for the saree. Take 6 metres if you want blouse fabric from the same piece.

How much fabric for a kurta?
+

Usually 2.5 metres for a regular kurta and around 3 metres for longer styles or wider sleeves. Best to confirm with your tailor before ordering.

Cotton Ikat or silk Ikat, which makes more sense?
+

Cotton Ikat works better for everyday wear. Silk Ikat feels richer and suits occasions where you actually want the fabric to stand out.

How do I tell the real Ikat from a printed copy?
+

Turn the fabric over. Real Ikat carries the pattern on both sides because the threads themselves were dyed before weaving. Printed fabric usually has a faded or plain reverse side with the design sitting only on the surface.

Do Sambalpuri and Pochampally both have GI tags?
+

Yes. Both are GI tagged weaving traditions which means genuine Sambalpuri can only come from Odisha and genuine Pochampally comes from Telangana.

Why buy Ikat fabric from iTokri?
+

A lot of what gets sold online as Ikat is just a surface print copying the look of the weave. It photographs well but feels flat once you hold it. iTokri sources directly from weaving communities in Odisha and Telangana so the patterns in the fabric come from actual dyed threads woven on a loom, not from a printer.
