The food bonds the women and offers strength and energy to maintain the day-long fast or vrat. Karwa Chauth Celebration 2023

Karwa signifies an earthen pot, while Chauth means four. The earthen pot is used during rituals and holds water, which is then offered to the moon while opening the fast. Mostly celebrated in Northern India by women of Hindu and Sikh communities, the festival comes on the fourth day of Krishan Paksha of Kartik month to celebrate the harvesting season.

Story Of Karwa Chauth

In the legend of Satyavan and Savitri, Yama, the Lord of Death, comes to take the life of Satyavan, husband of Savitri. She begs him to spare her husband’s life and gives up food and water on his refusal. Seeing this, Yama cajoles her to ask anything but not her husband’s life. She asks to bear his children. On hearing this, Yama has no choice but to bring her husband back to life.

Another legend has the story of Veeravati, a queen who had seven brothers. She waited desperately for the moon to appear on her first karwa Chauth at her parent’s home. Her brothers could not bear to see her hungry. They tricked her into believing that the moon had come up by showing light through a reflecting mirror. She accepted and broke open her fast. On the way back to her husband’s home, she learned that the king, her husband, had passed away because she had eaten after seeing a false moon. She begged for forgiveness from Goddess Parvati, who blessed her that she could bring her husband alive if she kept the Karwa Chauth fast by diligently following all the rituals. Veeravati did so on the next karwa Chauth and revived her husband.

Karwa Chauth Rituals

In keeping with tradition, the rituals begin at dawn. A married woman bathes before sunrise and eats sargi prepared by her mother–in–law. The women stay without food and water throughout the day. The day is spent in a community gathering, meeting other married women, having a chit chat, applying henna, and much laughter and joy.

In the evenings, the women dress up in all their finery and gather for prayers for their husbands' health and long life. The women sit in a circle, each with their respective Karwa Chauth Pooja Thali, usually covered by a beautiful, decorated cloth piece containing matthi, fruits, dry fruits, and gifts for the mother-in-law. The fast is called off by observing some rituals when the moon becomes visible in the night sky.  The women see the moon through the strainer and then see their husbands' faces through it. The husband gives her water and sweets, helping her to open her fast. An engaged and to-be-married woman also keeps the fast for good health and long life of her to-be-husband. She breaks open the fast when the first star appears in the sky.

Karwa Chauth, both a tradition and expression of love for their life partners, is a special occasion for women and men alike. With the depiction of Karwa Chauth in Bollywood movies, this festival has also undergone some changes and become popular. The festival is now celebrated in several parts of India where it was not traditionally celebrated. Nowadays, with changing times and gender equality, even men have started keeping the fast for their wives.

The happiness grows exponentially as the mothers-in-law enjoy karwa Chauth gifts, and the couple gives each other gift cards.
