Srikalahasti kalamkari art wall hanging is handpainted by master artisan Ghanshyam Sarode using a traditional bamboo kalam and natural dyes. Srikalahasti kalamkari is a time-intensive, freehand art form where designs are drawn directly onto cotton fabric using a bamboo kalam. The word kalamkari comes from the persian words kalam, meaning pen, and kari, meaning work. The process begins with washing and preparing the cotton fabric so it can absorb colours evenly. The fabric is treated with natural ingredients that help fix the dyes and reduce colour bleeding. A bamboo kalam with an absorbent cotton tip is used to draw fine outlines and fill the design. The artist first sketches the motif, then applies natural colours derived from plants and minerals, with each colour added separately and allowed to set before the next. Fine black outlines with earthy shades of madder red, golden ochre and indigo blue are characteristic of the Srikalahasti style. The artwork may feature storytelling motifs inspired by mythology, nature and temple art. The complete process involves fabric preparation, freehand drawing, natural dyeing, washing and finishing, making it a detailed and labour-intensive craft.
