Kalamkari art wall hanging with tree of life motif is created by master artisan Pitchuka Srinivas from Pedana, Andhra Pradesh, using the Machilipatnam Kalamkari tradition of block-printed art. Created using 188 hand-carved wooden blocks through a careful 45-day process, each colour is applied separately to build the intricate composition, reflecting the time and craftsmanship involved in creating this detailed artwork. The central motif is a majestic tree of life whose sweeping branches connect all life forms, with a vast canopy of stylized leaves and floral patterns sheltering peacocks, birds and smaller animals, all feeding from its bounty. Tribals collect food and fodder beside a small hay hut, a deer feeds nearby and a cheetah hides amongst the branches, capturing the natural balance of the ecosystem. The tree of life symbolises vitality, harmony and the interconnectedness of nature. The dense, detailed artwork is rendered in natural dyes on cotton fabric. It is enclosed within a complex, multi-layered border featuring intricate motifs, adding depth and a rich decorative finish while keeping this centuries-old craft alive. What is Kalamkari printing?
Kalamkari is a hand-painted and block-printed textile art from Andhra Pradesh. Two distinct styles exist: Machilipatnam (block printed) and Srikalahasti (pen drawn). Mythological scenes and floral motifs are the signature.
How is Kalamkari printing done?
In the pen style, artists draw directly on fabric using a bamboo kalam dipped in natural dyes. The block-printed style uses carved wooden blocks. Both involve 17+ steps including mordanting, dyeing, and sun-bleaching.
How can I tell if my Kalamkari product is genuinely block printed?
Look for slight irregularities in the pattern. block prints are never perfectly symmetrical. The reverse side shows faint ink marks. These small imperfections confirm it's hand-stamped, not machine-made.
Why do Kalamkari prints look slightly different from each other?
Each impression is placed by hand. Block pressure, ink amount, and fabric texture create natural variations. Two pieces from the same batch will look similar but never identical.
How should I wash Kalamkari printed products?
First wash in cold water. Always hand wash or gentle machine cycle. Dry in shade. direct sun can shift natural dye colors over time.
What does Cotton feel like?
Cotton feels soft, breathable, and familiar against skin. Handloom cotton has a slight irregularity you can feel with your fingertips . tiny slubs that machine-made fabric lacks.
How do I wash Cotton products?
Hand wash or gentle machine cycle in cold water. Use mild detergent. Cotton can shrink 3-5% in the first wash. that's normal. Air dry in shade for best color retention.
Is Cotton suitable for all seasons?
Cotton breathes well in hot weather and layers comfortably in winter. It's one of the most versatile fabrics across Indian seasons. Lighter weaves suit summer; denser ones work in cooler months.
How durable is Cotton?
