Channapatna toys come from Channapatna town in Karnataka, known as 'Toy Town of India.' Artisans turn ivory wood on lathes and coat them with bright, non-toxic lacquer. The craft has a GI tag and dates back to Tipu Sultan's era.
What kind of wood is used?
Artisans select ivory wood (Wrightia tinctoria), mount it on lathes, shape it while spinning, and apply vegetable-dye lacquer. The heat from spinning melts the lac onto the surface. Each toy is individually shaped and finished.
