Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hakoba fabric exactly?
+

Hakoba is a lightweight cotton fabric with tiny cutwork patterns woven into it. Those little open holes are what give the fabric its airy feel and delicate look. In summer clothing especially, it works beautifully because the fabric feels light without looking plain.

Is Hakoba the same as Schiffli fabric?
+

Not really. Schiffli creates patterns through embroidery stitched on top of the fabric. In Hakoba, the cutwork is part of the fabric structure itself. The design is built into the weave, not added later.

Does Hakoba tear easily because of the cutwork?
+

Good quality Hakoba holds up well with normal use. The fabric is woven carefully around the cutwork areas so they don't just fall apart. Rough pulling or aggressive washing can damage it, but with basic care it wears perfectly fine.

Is Hakoba good for summer wear?
+

Very good. The openwork makes the fabric more breathable than regular cotton and the overall look feels soft, light and easy in hot weather.

How many metres do I need for a Hakoba kurta?
+

Usually around 2.5 metres for a regular kurta and closer to 3 metres for longer styles. Since the fabric has cutwork, tailors often appreciate having a little extra while matching panels and cutting around motifs.

Will I need lining under Hakoba fabric?
+

Most people add lining for kurtas because Hakoba can be slightly sheer depending on the design and colour. A soft cotton lining works best and still keeps the garment breathable.

Is Hakoba good for dupattas?
+

Really good. The cutwork gives the fabric a soft delicate look that works beautifully for dupattas, especially with plain kurtas or solid coloured suits.

Does Hakoba shrink after washing?
+

Since it's cotton based, some shrinkage on the first wash is normal. Better to wash the fabric once before stitching.

Why buy Hakoba fabric from iTokri?
+

A lot of Hakoba sold in regular fabric markets is heavily machine made with perfectly identical patterns and a slightly stiff artificial feel. Handloom Hakoba has softer cotton, natural weave variation and a much nicer fall once stitched. iTokri sources from weaving communities working with these fabrics directly, so the cloth feels lived in and breathable instead of overly processed.
