Description
A whole village, drawn by hand with a bamboo pen, fills the olive green body of this silk cotton saree, and a swing scene waits on the rust orange pallu.
The design
Small domed huts, palm trees, animals and tiny figures crowd the body in sky blue, yellow, pink and purple.
A rust orange border with fine gold woven stripes runs down the long edge, with a painted sky blue flower chain beside it.
On the pallu, one figure stands and another sits on a swing, with round purple and yellow blooms around them. It ends in a cream strip with short tassels.
How it is made
People often ask what separates pen Kalamkari from block Kalamkari. The answer has two parts.
The hand. In Srikalahasti every figure and face is drawn freehand with a bamboo pen called the kalam. At Machilipatnam the design is carved into wooden blocks and stamped.
The order. Each colour has its fixed turn:
1. The cloth first takes buffalo milk and myrobalan, so later dyes will not spread.
2. The black outline comes next: iron fermented with jaggery, which holds only where the myrobalan went.
3. Red is madder, taken only where alum was painted first.
4. Blue is indigo, kept off other areas with wax.
5. Yellow is painted by hand, and yellow over blue turns green.
6. Between colours, the cloth is washed in running water.
Chemistry fixes this order, not habit.
The cloth
Silk cotton is a blend of silk and cotton fibres. Cotton gives it softness and air; silk adds a little sheen. Here the painted surface reads matte and the fall is soft.
It suits warm months and cool ones. Wear it to a festive day, or a quieter one.
Natural dyes can leave a mild natural smell at first; it is part of the craft, not a defect.
A Note on Handmade Beauty Slight irregularities in weave, print and colour are natural to handmade textiles. They are the record of the hand that made this piece, not flaws.
South Kargha’s handcrafted weaves. Where tradition meets contemporary design in every thread.

For those of you using a 44-inch wide fabric, this guide suggests measurements for a standard L Size. Think of this as your starting point. If you're working with different sizes or fabric widths, just adjust up or down accordingly. Hope this helps!
When it comes to how much fabric you'll need, it really depends on the design. We'd recommend having a chat with your designer or tailor before you order, just to be on the safe side.

Orders shipped outside India cannot be returned or exchanged, so message us before you order and we will help with size, fabric and a video of the actual piece.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cards, UPI, net banking and wallets. Cash on delivery is available in most Indian pin codes, and you will see it at checkout if yours qualifies. International orders are paid by card or PayPal, and are not COD-eligible.
How do I know this is genuinely handmade?
We source every product directly from artisan workshops across India. No middlemen, no factories. We work with over 10,000 artisans in 500+ craft clusters.
How will my order be packed?
Every order includes a handwritten note and a small surprise gift from us. Your product is wrapped carefully to reach you safe. We've done this since day one.
What length and width can I expect in your sarees?
Our sarees are typically 5.5 metres long with a 0.8-metre blouse piece. Some come at 6.3 metres without a separate blouse piece. Check the product page for exact measurements.
Does this saree come with a blouse piece?
Most of our sarees include an unstitched blouse piece. The product page clearly mentions if one is included. If it says 'without blouse,' only the saree is shipped.
Can I wear this for daily use or is it more for occasions?
We carry both everyday and occasion sarees. Lighter fabrics work well daily. Heavier weaves or embroidered ones suit weddings and festivals. The product description notes the best fit.
How should I store my saree when not wearing it?
Fold it along the length and wrap in a soft muslin cloth. Store flat in a dry cupboard. Refold every few months to avoid crease marks on the fabric.
Is the fall and pico already done?
Fall and pico (stitched border) are not done unless the listing specifically says so. Most sarees ship unstitched. Many local tailors offer fall and pico service at a nominal cost.
What is Srikalahasti Kalamkari?
Srikalahasti Kalamkari is a hand-drawn textile art from Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh. Artists use a bamboo pen (kalam) dipped in natural dyes to draw mythological scenes directly on fabric. No blocks are used.
How is Srikalahasti Kalamkari done?
The artist holds a pointed bamboo kalam wrapped with wool (to hold dye) and draws freehand on fabric. Natural dyes from indigo, pomegranate, and iron are used. The fabric goes through multiple wash and mordant steps between colors.
How can I tell if my Srikalahasti Kalamkari product is genuine?
Look for slight irregularities in the pattern. Block prints are never perfectly symmetrical. The reverse side shows faint ink marks. These small imperfections confirm it's hand-stamped, not machine-made.
Why do Srikalahasti Kalamkari prints look slightly different from each other?
Each impression is placed by hand. Block pressure, ink amount, and fabric texture create natural variations. Two pieces from the same batch will look similar but never identical.
How should I wash Srikalahasti Kalamkari products?
First wash in cold water. Always hand wash or use a gentle machine cycle. Dry in shade. Direct sun can shift natural dye colors over time.
What does Silk Cotton feel like?
Silk cotton blends the smoothness of silk with cotton's breathability. It feels soft, mid-weight, and comfortable. The blend creates a gentle sheen without silk's full price.
How do I wash Silk Cotton products?
Dry clean is safest for Silk Cotton. If hand washing, use cold water and a mild silk-specific detergent. Never wring. Roll in a towel to absorb moisture, then dry flat in shade.
Is Silk Cotton suitable for summer or winter?
Silk Cotton works across seasons. It feels cool in summer and retains warmth in winter. The natural temperature regulation of silk makes it comfortable year-round in Indian climates.
How durable is Silk Cotton?
With proper care, Silk Cotton products last for years. The fibre is naturally strong. Avoid rough handling, direct sun, and chemical detergents. Gentle care keeps it looking fresh long-term.
Why is Silk Cotton priced higher than cotton?
Silk production is labour-intensive. from rearing silkworms to reeling the thread. Silk Cotton involves additional regional techniques that add time and skill. The price reflects the material and the maker's effort.
