Fabric Care
Dry clean only. Between wears, air in shade and store folded in a soft cotton cloth. Iron on the reverse at a low setting, never directly over embroidery or zari. Refold it along new lines every few months so the folds do not set. Note: keep away from perfume sprays and damp.
Description
Deer and birds wander between tall trees on this coral pink silk cotton saree, every outline drawn freehand with a pen, under a royal blue pallu.
The design
Slim trees with palm fronds and small flowers rise across the body, with deer and birds between them in yellow, sky blue and green.
Both edges carry a wide antique gold border woven with scrolling leaves and flowers.
The pallu changes to royal blue, with thin yellow branches, large sunflower-like blooms and a parrot. A cream strip with short tassels finishes it.
How it is made
1. The raw cotton is washed in running water to strip out the starch and oils from the loom.
2. It is dipped in buffalo milk mixed with powdered myrobalan, squeezed and dried; this gives the warm off-white ground.
3. A charcoal pencil of burnt tamarind twig lays out the design freehand.
4. The outlines are filled with the kalam dipped in kasimi, the fermented iron and jaggery black.
5. Alum is painted by hand wherever red will go; the cloth rests a day and is rinsed under running water.
6. Boiling with madder brings up the red, and only the alum-painted parts take it.
Blue, yellow and green follow, each filled one dye at a time.
The cloth
Silk cotton joins silk and cotton fibres. It feels soft, mid-weight and comfortable, with a gentle sheen. In these pictures the painted body looks matte beside the shine of the gold zari border.
Wear it in warm or cool weather, the whole year round. It is chosen for festive days and sits well on casual ones.
Natural dyes can leave a mild natural smell at first; it is part of the craft, not a defect.

What length and width can I expect in your sarees?
Our sarees are typically 5.5 metres long with a 0.8-metre blouse piece. Some come at 6.3 metres without a separate blouse piece. Check the product page for exact measurements.
Does this saree come with a blouse piece?
Most of our sarees include an unstitched blouse piece. The product page clearly mentions if one is included. If it says 'without blouse,' only the saree is shipped.
Can I wear this for daily use or is it more for occasions?
We carry both everyday and occasion sarees. Lighter fabrics work well daily. Heavier weaves or embroidered ones suit weddings and festivals. The product description notes the best fit.
How should I store my saree when not wearing it?
Fold it along the length and wrap in a soft muslin cloth. Store flat in a dry cupboard. Refold every few months to avoid crease marks on the fabric.
Is the fall and pico already done?
Fall and pico (stitched border) are not done unless the listing specifically says so. Most sarees ship unstitched. Many local tailors offer fall and pico service at a nominal cost.

Srikalahasti Kalamkari is a hand-drawn textile art from Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh. Artists use a bamboo pen (kalam) dipped in natural dyes to draw mythological scenes directly on fabric. No blocks are used.
How is Srikalahasti Kalamkari done?
The artist holds a pointed bamboo kalam wrapped with wool (to hold dye) and draws freehand on fabric. Natural dyes from indigo, pomegranate, and iron are used. The fabric goes through multiple wash and mordant steps between colors.
