Material
Tribal kapadaganda hand embroidered pure handwoven cotton stole comes from the Niyamgiri hill ranges of Rayagada, Odisha. Nestled deep in these hills, where dense forests meet sacred peaks, the Dongria Kondh, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group living across 112 villages, have carried this centuries-old craft through generations. The Kapadaganda stole, Geographical Indication Certified since January 2024, carries within its threads the rivers, fields, and hilltops of Niyamgiri. Every triangle stitched is a mountain. Every line of red is a memory of sacrifice. Every stroke of yellow, the turmeric fields below. The off-white cotton base is hand-woven on a pit loom by the neighbouring Dom community at a consistent 10s count. Each piece is then embroidered entirely by hand by the skilled master women artisans of the Dongria Kondh community. The embroidery is worked in four colours: red for sacrifice, green for the forests, yellow for turmeric and harmony, and brown for the earth. Motifs named Wata, Kandaba, Kralikana, Keri, Hipa, Kahani, Karpi, and Kanka map the sacred peaks, axes, fields, and boundaries of Dongria land onto the cloth. Each piece takes one to three months to complete. No two are identical. This stole is worn at festivals, weddings, and community rituals, and gifted as a mark of love and respect within the Dongria Kondh community.
This is not just a stole. It carries the hills, the gods, and the tradition of the Dongria Kondh women. Wear it with the respect it deserves.
Note : This piece carries tiny knots, thread pulls, or uneven lines not flaws, but fingerprints. Every irregularity is a whisper from the hands that made it. It’s what happens when tradition weaves through time, not machines. If you’re looking for perfection, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for soul you’ve found it.

Nestled deep in the Niyamgiri Hill ranges of Odisha, where dense forests meet sacred peaks, the Dongria Kondh have carried a quiet but powerful craft for centuries. The Kapadaganda shawl and stole, embroidered by Dongria women, holds within its threads the rivers, fields, and hilltops of Niyamgiri. Every triangle is a mountain. Every line of red, a memory of sacrifice. Every stroke of yellow is the turmeric in the fields below. It was here that K. Anuradha founded Folkweave in 2023, registered in 2024 as Koraput Handmade, with one conviction: reviving Koraput tribal textiles, their color palette, design philosophy, and weaving technique. Today Folkweave works with more than 300 artisans across the four districts of the Koraput region, of which 120 artisans specialize in hand embroidery. Each piece takes one to three months to complete. Each piece of Kapadaganda is unique because, just as each human being is unique, each woman brings her own memory of the hills into every stitch. GI certified, January 2024.

The product page lists the exact fabric: cotton, silk, wool, pashmina, or blends. We also mention the craft technique used. Fabric weight and texture are described for each piece.

Iron on low heat while slightly damp. Use a pressing cloth for silk, wool, and embroidered stoles. Cotton stoles can handle direct ironing. Steam works well for removing wrinkles gently.

How long does it take to weave a Jamdani product?
Two weavers sit side by side at the loom. One manages the base weave while the other inserts pattern threads using small bamboo sticks. A single saree can take weeks to months. Every motif is woven, not printed or stitched.
How can I tell if this is handloom and not powerloom?
Handloom fabric has a slightly uneven texture when you run your fingers along it. The selvedge edges look different from machine-woven ones. The weave carries a softness that powerlooms cannot replicate.
Why are there slight irregularities in the weave?
A human hand operates the loom. Thread tension, shuttle speed, and pedal pressure vary naturally. These small irregularities are proof of handloom origin. not defects.
