Description & Material
Pure sheep and Merino wool marled fabric is handwoven by skilled women weavers and spinners of Looms of Ladakh, from remote villages of Leh, Kargil and Changthang, carrying forward a centuries-old nomadic weaving tradition passed down from mothers and grandmothers. Perfect for stitching shawls, scarves, jackets and coats for winter wear and travel. The marled effect is created by twisting together two or more differently coloured yarns before weaving, resulting in a naturally speckled and textured surface. Made from a blend of 50% Merino wool and 50% sheep wool, soft, warm, durable and breathable, coloured using azo-free dyes, ideal for cold weather wear.
Note : This piece carries tiny knots, thread pulls, or uneven lines not flaws, but fingerprints. Every irregularity is a whisper from the hands that made it. It’s what happens when tradition weaves through time, not machines. If you’re looking for perfection, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for soul you’ve found it.

Looms of Ladakh is a women-led cooperative founded in 2017 by Abhilasha Bahuguna and Prasanna Ramaswamy G, growing out of a 2015 skill-development initiative called Project Laktsal in Chumur, a village in Ladakh's Changthang region. The cooperative works with Changpa nomadic women weavers and spinners from Leh, Kargil, and Changthang, who spin and weave Pashmina, Yak, and sheep wool using a technique passed down through generations of their community. The weaving itself follows a set process. For a stole, warping takes about a day, drafting and denting take about two days, and weaving a full border design takes about three days, roughly five days from start to finished piece. For yardage fabric, preparing the yarn takes a day, warping on the drum takes two days, drafting and denting take three days, and weaving runs about a metre a day for plain fabric or three days per metre when a design is involved. The cooperative follows what it calls a farm-to-fashion model, where the same women are involved from procuring raw wool through to weaving and selling the finished product, making stoles, shawls, caps, socks, cushion covers, throws, and bags

For those of you using a 44-inch wide fabric, this guide suggests measurements for a standard L Size. Think of this as your starting point. If you're working with different sizes or fabric widths, just adjust up or down accordingly. Hope this helps!
When it comes to how much fabric you'll need, it really depends on the design. We'd recommend having a chat with your designer or tailor before you order, just to be on the safe side.

How do I know this is genuinely handmade?
We source every product directly from artisan workshops across India. No middlemen, no factories. We work with over 10,000 artisans in 500+ craft clusters.
How will my order be packed?
Every order includes a handwritten note and a small surprise gift from us. Your product is wrapped carefully to reach you safe. We've done this since day one.
How much fabric will I receive?
The exact yardage is mentioned on each product page. Our blouse pieces come in standard cuts. typically 1 metre, 2.5 metres, or full bolts. Check before ordering.
Can I use this fabric for stitching garments?
Yes. Our blouse pieces work well for kurtas, blouses, dresses, and more. The product description notes the fabric weight and drape to help you decide the best garment type.
Will the fabric shrink after washing?
Handloom and handmade fabrics may shrink 3-5% after the first wash. We suggest buying slightly extra if stitching a fitted garment. Pre-wash in cold water to settle it.
Is the print/design on both sides of the fabric?
Block-printed and screen-printed fabrics show the design on one side. Woven and ikat fabrics often show the pattern on both sides. The product page mentions this.
Can I order a specific length?
Blouse pieces are pre-cut to the length mentioned on the product page. Custom lengths are not available for standard listings. For bulk or custom orders, contact our team.
What does Woolens feel like?
Woolens feel warm, springy, and insulating. Natural wool has a slight crimp you can feel . tiny waves in each fibre that trap air. Handwoven woolens have extra body and texture.
How do I wash Woolens products?
Hand wash in cold water with mild wool detergent. Do not twist or wring. Lay flat on a towel to dry. Dry cleaning is recommended for heavily embroidered woolens pieces.
Is Woolens suitable only for winter?
Primarily, yes. Woolens works best in cool and cold weather. Lighter woolens pieces can work in air-conditioned indoor settings. It's not suitable for peak summer use.
How do I store Woolens products in off-season?
Clean before storing. Fold and place in a breathable cotton bag. Add neem leaves or naphthalene to prevent moths. Store in a dry, dark cupboard. Check every few months.
Does Woolens pill or shed?
Some pilling is normal with wool and wool-blend fabrics in early use. Gently remove pills with a fabric shaver. After the initial period, the surface stabilizes and pilling reduces.
Still Need Help?
Can't find the answer you're looking for? Our support team is here for you.
The first wash decides how a handmade fabric ages. What settles, what shrinks, what needs shade instead of sun. Our Fabric Care Compendium answers it for every weave, print and dye we ship, with Masterji's home remedies for the accidents in between.
