Tuma craft, which uses dry bottle gourds, is considered as one of the unique crafts of Chattisgarh. A recently developed craft is an example of craft innovation and exists in the region of Bastar in Chattisgarh. Dried gourd is etched with hot knifes with beautiful patterns and made into various products ranging from wall hangings to pendants. Tuma products include lampshades, planters, wall hangings, utensils and masks. Bitter gourds, which are normally not consumable, are used for the craft. Earlier the waste gourds were taken from the villagers, but now they grow it. Generally jewelry is made from the waste part of it. Designs are made keeping transportation in mind, like small lampshades are put inside big lampshades and filled with the jewelry products.

What is Tuma Craft?
Tuma Craft from Karnataka uses dried bottle gourd shells. Artisans clean, dry, and shape the hard outer shell into decorative items, containers, and musical instruments. The natural surface is carved, painted, or polished.
Is this eco-friendly?
Artisans select mature bottle gourds, dry them for weeks until the shell hardens, scoop out the interior, and sand the surface. They then carve, burn, or paint designs onto the shell. No two gourds have the same shape.
Will it hold up to daily use?
Natural fibre products are surprisingly sturdy for regular household use. Avoid heavy loads and prolonged moisture. With basic care, they last for years and develop a nice patina.
How do I clean Tuma Craft products?
Wipe with a dry cloth. For stubborn dust, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Never soak in water. Prolonged moisture weakens natural fibres and can cause mold.
Will the color or texture change over time?
Natural fibres deepen in tone with age. Some lighten with sun exposure. This aging is normal and gives the product character. Store away from direct sun to slow the process.
