Farmers in Kutch grow Old World cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) on rain-fed fields. After harvest, the cotton is hand-spun or mill-spun and then handloom woven by Vankar weavers in Bhujodi and surrounding villages.
How can I tell if this is handloom and not powerloom?
Handloom fabric has a slightly uneven texture when you run your fingers along it. The selvedge edges look different from machine-woven ones. The weave carries a softness that powerlooms cannot replicate.
Why are there slight irregularities in the weave?
A human hand operates the loom. Thread tension, shuttle speed, and pedal pressure vary naturally. These small irregularities are proof of handloom origin. not defects.
How do I care for Kala Cotton handloom products?
