Madur weaving comes from Midnapore in West Bengal. Artisans weave floor mats from a local grass variety called madurkathi. The mats are flat, smooth, and naturally cool. GI tagged and culturally significant in Bengali households.
Is this eco-friendly?
Artisans harvest madurkathi grass from local wetlands, dry it, split it, and dye it if needed. The strips are woven on a flat-frame loom to create smooth, even mats. A standard mat takes 1-3 days depending on size and design.
Will it hold up to daily use?
Natural fibre products are surprisingly sturdy for regular household use. Avoid heavy loads and prolonged moisture. With basic care, they last for years and develop a nice patina.
How do I clean Madur Grass products?
Wipe with a dry cloth. For stubborn dust, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Never soak in water. prolonged moisture weakens natural fibres and can cause mold.
Will the color or texture change over time?
Natural fibres deepen in tone with age. Some lighten with sun exposure. This aging is normal and gives the product character. Store away from direct sun to slow the process.
