Green mata ni pachedi handpainted natural dyed chanderi silk handloom dupatta is handpainted by Dilip Chitara of Gujarat using a bamboo stick kalam and Khajuri tree brushes through the Ghasuni process. Colours are mixed with gum to settle into the fabric: haldi for yellow, iron and jaggery for black, imli seeds and fitkari for red, indigo for blue, manjistha root for pink and iron and water for off white. After painting, the dupatta is kept in sunlight for a full day to fix the colours, then washed once to remove any excess. Made from 2/74 mercerised cotton warp and 2/65 chanderi silk weft. Mata ni Pachedi is also called the Kalamkari of Gujarat, thanks to its resemblance to Kalamkari from South India and the same method of painting using a bamboo kalam. Mata ni Pachedi literally means behind the mother goddess. When people of the nomadic Vaghari community of Gujarat were barred from entering temples, they made their own shrines with depictions of the Mother Goddess on cloth. This sacred art, now revered by all, is over 700 years old. Ideal for religious occasions, festive wear and everyday ethnic draping.
