Pochampally Ikat comes from Pochampally village in Telangana, recognized as a UNESCO tradition site. The village practices double ikat, where both warp and weft yarns are tie-dyed before weaving. GI tagged.
How long does it take to weave a Pochampally Ikat product?
Both sets of yarns (warp and weft) are tied and dyed to predetermined patterns. When placed on the loom, the dyed threads intersect to form the design. The alignment requires extreme precision. A saree takes 5-10 days.
How can I tell if this is handloom and not powerloom?
Handloom fabric has a slightly uneven texture when you run your fingers along it. The selvedge edges look different from machine-woven ones. The weave carries a softness that powerlooms cannot replicate.
Why are there slight irregularities in the weave?
A human hand operates the loom. Thread tension, shuttle speed, and pedal pressure vary naturally. These small irregularities are proof of handloom origin. not defects.
How do I care for Pochampally Ikat handloom products?
Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent for the first few washes. Avoid wringing. gently squeeze and dry flat in shade. The fabric softens beautifully with each wash.
What does Cotton feel like?
Cotton feels soft, breathable, and familiar against skin. Handloom cotton has a slight irregularity you can feel with your fingertips . tiny slubs that machine-made fabric lacks.
How do I wash Cotton products?
Hand wash or gentle machine cycle in cold water. Use mild detergent. Cotton can shrink 3-5% in the first wash. that's normal. Air dry in shade for best color retention.
