Raw kala cotton is soaked in a solution of castor oil and goat dung for 24 hours. This strips industrial sizing and opens the fiber to receive dye. The cloth is then sun-bleached on open ground.
A paste of clay, gum arabic, and slaked lime is applied through carved teak blocks with mathematical precision. Each registration must align within 1mm of the previous layer. A single misalignment ruins the batch.
The cloth enters the indigo vat, maintained at precisely 28–32 degrees Celsius. Each immersion lasts 15 minutes, followed by oxidation in open air. This cycle repeats 7–12 times to build depth. The vat is a living organism; its chemistry shifts with weather.
Post-indigo, the fabric is immersed in alizarin extracted from madder root and pomegranate rind. The mordant (alum) determines whether the dye yields crimson or ochre. Temperature, timing, and pH are non-negotiable.
The printed cloth undergoes extended river washing to strip unfixed dye, then sun-cures for 3–7 days. UV exposure catalyzes a final chemical bond between fiber and pigment. The cloth shipped to you has survived a gauntlet.
