What Kind Of Fabric Is A Jacquard?

Jacquard fabric features an intricate pattern which is not printed on the surface of the fabric but woven into the warp. It is fabricated with a special mechanical loom. The name of the fabric comes from the French weaver Joseph-Marie Jacquard, who was the inventor of this technology. The pattern is applied to the Jacquard fabric makes it look unique.

There are also some knitted options in the Jacquard fabric. The knit of the Jacquard fabric is either double knit or single knit and can be made with any yarn. While the single knit fabric might have a float on the back, the double knit has no floats and thus is reversible.

Jacquard is a weave, and thus it can be made with various fibres. The most common ones are- 

  • Cotton- The fabric formed with a blend of cotton is soft, breathable and opaque. 
  • Silk- A smooth, glossy, thin and semi-sheer/opaque fabric is formed by combining silk with Jacquard. 
  • Wool- The combination of wool and Jacquard forms a soft, cosy, opaque fabric. 
  • Linen- A soft, opaque and breathable fabric created by blending linen with Jacquard . 
  • Blend- The blend created with Jacquard fabric comes in various degrees of softness and transparency.
