Block printing of Kutch

The ingenious and patterned block printing technique arrived in Kutch about four hundred years ago when Muslim craftsmen settled in Dhamadka, a village 50 kilometers from the center of Bhuj fabric printing. The earthquake that occurred in 2001 caused non-stop damage to Bhuj, Dhamadka and other towns in the area. As a result of this disaster, fabric printing craftsmen were gathered together and a new village was built to rebuild life and start craft production, they name the place. This is Ajarakhpur.

Process of Kutch block printing

Traditionally, block kutch printing was done exclusively on both sides of cotton fabrics and nowadays silk is also used. He uses intricate geometric patterns to create collections in indigo, brown and black and white. The patterns are inspired by the architectural forms of the jali windows and the intricate triangular domes of Islamic architecture.
