Frequently Asked Questions
What is ikat cotton dress material?
+

Ikat cotton dress material is an unstitched fabric set made using the ikat weaving technique, where yarn is resist-dyed before weaving to create geometric or nature-inspired patterns.

What is the difference between Pochampally and Sambalpuri ikat dress material?
+

Pochampally ikat dress material comes from Nalgonda district in Telangana and is characterised by bold geometric patterns - diamonds, chevrons, and wave borders - in high-contrast colour combinations. Sambalpuri ikat originates from Odisha and features finer, more intricate motifs drawn from nature, such as the shankha (conch), chakra (wheel), and lotus, typically in earthier tones. Both are GI-tagged handloom crafts; the choice between them is largely one of personal style preference.

Is ikat cotton dress material good for daily wear?
+

Yes. Ikat cotton dress material is breathable. It gets soft after the first few washes, and wears well across seasons. Cotton ikat suits are lighter and more comfortable in warm weather compared to ikat silk blends, making them a popular year-round choice.

Which Types Of Ikat unstitched dress materials does iTokri have?

iTokri's ikat cotton dress material collection brings together unstitched suit sets from India's two most celebrated ikat traditions - Pochampally from Telangana and Sambalpuri from Odisha. Both are GI-tagged crafts. Both are woven on pit looms by weavers who have inherited the craft across generations. Neither can be replicated on a power loom without losing what makes them worth wearing.

Our unstitched cotton ikat fabrics are sourced directly from master weavers across prominent craft hubs, ensuring you receive 100% pure, breathable, and colour-fast materials perfect for tailoring personalised ethnic wear.

Did You Know This Interesting Trivia About Ikat Weaving?

The ikat weaver works backwards from the finished cloth - dyeing what will become the pattern before the loom is ever set up. Ikkat is the only textile technique where the design lives in the yarn, not on the fabric.

What is Ikat Fabric?

Ikkat is an ancient resist dyeing technique with roots in the yesteryears of Malay and Indonesian regions. The name Ikat (often spelt Ikkat) is derived from the Indonesian word mengikat, which means "to tie" or "to bind".

Ikat is a weaving technique where the pattern is dyed into the yarn before it goes on the loom. Every colour, every geometric motif - the chevrons, diamonds, fish-bone borders is decided thread by thread before a single inch of fabric is woven. That's what gives ikat its particular character: a slight softness at the edges of each motif, a quality handloom weavers call the "ikat bleed," and what makes every piece visually unmistakable. The authenticity of ikkat lies in these blurs and irregularities.

How is Ikat Cotton Dress Material Made?

1. Bundles of yarn are bound into large hanks.

2. Parallel threads are stretched tightly across a frame and treated with starch

3. Specific sections of the yarn are tightly bound and sealed off to resist water and dye.

4. The bound yarn hanks are submerged in a dye bath. The process is repeated for multi-coloured ikkat patterns.

5. Once the final colour is applied, all the bindings are carefully sliced open to reveal a calculated pattern of variegated colour on the loose threads.

6. Ikat patterns emerge organically on the loom as the warp and weft threads intersect.
