Why is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated?

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chavithi is one of the most auspicious and loved festivals in Indian culture. This 10-day festival is celebrated as the birthday of Ganesh Ji. With Indian cultural staples like modak and devotional chants, devotees welcome Ganpati Bappa into their homes.

Ganesh Ji is regarded as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and wealth and is worshipped as the god of the beginning.

What is the Story Behind Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesha.

As per the mythological stories passed down through the generations, Goddess Parvati created a little boy with the ubtan she used to guard her while she bathed. Ganesha was instructed not to let anyone in the meantime.

When Lord Shiva, the husband of Goddess Parvati, arrived, he was stopped by the little boy, as instructed.

Ganesha told Shiva that he was the son of Parvati, which angered Lord Shiva. Out of anger, he beheaded the little boy. Seeing this, Parvati was devastated. Shiva, in order to bring the boy back to life, asked his followers to bring the first head they found, which happened to be of an elephant. Shiva resurrected the boy by adding the head of the elephant to his body, giving him the name of Ganesha or Gajanan (Gaj means Elephant).

Lord Shiva also blessed Ganesha to be worshipped before all gods during any rituals.

This is the story behind Ganesh Chaturthi.

Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi's significance extends beyond its religious and mythological importance. From a scientific perspective to a religious perspective, the level of significance of Ganesh Chaturthi is the same. Let’s explore the value of the 10-day festival from different views:

  • Religious Perspective

Vinayak Chaturthi starts on the fourth day of Shukla Paksha of the Bhadra and ends with Ananth Chaturdasi. This is dedicated to the birth of Ganesh ji, who removes the obstacles. It is believed that during these 10 days, Ganesh ji visits the earth and blesses the devotees. The main essence of Ganpati Chaturthi is to get free from sin and lead a life filled with positive energy and blessings. Further, Ganesh ji denotes intelligence and wisdom; thus, worshipping them during this period blesses you with prosperity, success, and growth.

  • Social Perspective

Apart from a religious perspective, this festival of Ganesh Chaturthi holds significance for many reasons. This festival has always been a symbol of faith and unity regardless of religion and background. Traditionally, Vinayak Chaturthi has been part of Indian culture since the rule of King Shivaji. However, the reason behind this grandeur has roots in the British realm when Lokmanya Tilak urged people to make it a grand public festival instead of a private celebration. During that period, this festival has become a symbol of national unity. Thus, Ganesh Chaturthi has emerged as a platform to bring people together. Even to date, it encourages social interaction among neighbourhood and local communities.

  • Spiritual importance of Ganesh Chaturthi puja

This auspicious 10-day festival also represents the cycle of birth, life, and death. As per the ancient tale, when Ganesh ji is taken out of immersion, it takes away the obstacles of the house and blesses the family members. On the day of farewell, Ganesha denotes the human consciousness, and water becomes a symbol of soul consciousness that is peaceful. Immersion of idols in water bodies shows the ultimate merging of the soul with the human body, which is the goal of life. This is the spiritual importance of the Ganesh Chaturthi puja.

  • Scientific Perspective

Besides the mythological stories, there is a scientific reason behind Ganesh Chaturthi. It is believed that during Visarjan, natural clay is suspended in large quantities in water bodies, which cleanses the water owing to its medical properties.
From a scientific perspective, it is essential to use eco-friendly Ganesh idols for Ganesh Chaturthi. This is not just environmentally friendly but also a true form of practising our culture and customs.

Now that you know the Ganesh Chaturthi festival history and origin, let us have a look at the proper way to celebrate Ganpati Poojan or Ganesh Chaturthi in India.

How is Ganesh Utsav Celebrated in India

Every state of India celebrates  Ganesh Utsav with an extravaganza, but the zeal with which it is celebrated in the Maharashtra region is unmatchable.

The excitement of the festival starts long before with the making of Ganesh's idol. To worship Ganesha, devotees bring the Ganesh murti to their homes with the chant of Ganpati Bappa Moriya on the first day.  Some devotees chose metal Ganesha idols, while others prefer homemade clay idols. In 2025, people are giving preference to handmade puja accessories for Ganesh Utsav as they are eco-friendly, sustainable, and promote Indian artisans.

After bringing home, the Prana Pratishtha ritual takes place, along with the Ganesh Pooja. During the ceremony, a pooja thali is decorated with sweets, handmade agarbatti, flowers, and Kumkum. After pooja, sweet offerings are made, which include modak, laddo, coconut rice, shrikhand, and banana sheera

For the next 10 days, Ganesh ji is worshipped with the same energy and enthusiasm. On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, the Ganesh idol is paraded through the streets with dancing and singing processions. And with heavy hearts, devotees bid adieu to their little friend and deity Ganesh Ji and immerse the idol in holy water bodies.

Pandal Decoration Tips & Trends

If you are decorating a Pandal for Ganesh Chaturthi and are looking for some Ganesh Chaturthi decoration ideas, you are in the right place.

Here are some tips and tricks for Ganesh Chaturthi pandal decorations:

  1. Use Eco-Friendly Materials: Opt for biodegradable decor like banana leaves, flowers, jute, bamboo, and terracotta. Avoid single-use decor items made of plastic.

  2. Choose Auspicious Colours: Red, orange, yellow, pink, gold, and maroon are considered to be the most auspicious colours for Ganesh Chaturthi.

  3. Lighting Matters: Add warm LED string lights, fairy lights, or diyas to create a divine ambience. You can consider decorative diyas for Ganesh Chaturthi Aarti.

  4. Handmade Torans & Hangings: Use bells, fabric torans, or beads to make garlands and hanging decor for the pandal.

  5. Include a Small Stage: Ganpati Bappa should be placed on a stage. Decorate this stage by adding a chowki where the Ganpati idol will be placed, lights, cloth drapes, rangoli designs, and curtains. Keep the Ganesh Chaturthi idol set elevated from the rest of the stage.

Ganesh Chaturthi Dos and Don’ts for Devotees

Here are some Dos and Donts that you should keep in mind while celebrating Vinayak Chaturthi:

Dos:

  1. Choose eco-friendly idols made from clay, cow dung, or natural materials to respect nature and traditions.

  2. Ensure your home and mandap are clean before you start decorating them. Use flowers and rangoli to decorate your home.

  3. Bring Bappa into the house during the shubh muhurat. This year, the shubh muhurat to bring Ganpati is between 1:54 pm on 26th August to 3:44 pm on 27th August 2025.

  4. Perform morning and evening aarti every day. Even if you use YouTube for playing aartis, make sure you sing along. Bappa wants true and honest devotion over anything else.

  5. Go for decor items that are made in India to support local artisans and preserve culture.

  6. Encourage children to participate in rituals.

  7. Share Ganesh Chaturthi gifts with friends and family members. You can give silver coins for pooja, as they are meaningful and valuable.

  8. Be responsible during visarjan. Immerse the idol at home in a bucket or community pool.

  9. Wear traditional Indian attire when participating in pujas.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid POP (Plaster of Paris) idols, as they harm water bodies and take years to dissolve.

  2. Don’t waste food or prasad offerings; distribute leftover prasad among community members or contact NGOs that feed homeless people in your city. Helping the needy is the best form of worship.

  3. Refrain from playing loud music or firecrackers. Keep celebrations respectful to elderly neighbors and students.

  4. Avoid alcohol and non-veg food, especially in homes where the Ganpati idol is present, for the duration of the festival.

  5. Don’t use plastic for decor or prasad: Switch to cloth, steel, or biodegradable materials instead.

Conclusion

On the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi, the immersion of the Ganesh idol marks the journey of Ganesh Ji to Mount Kailash, where Parvati and Shiva reside. This also symbolizes the human journey from birth to the ultimate conclusion. From social to spiritual, Ganesh Chaturthi spreads the message of love, unity, and wisdom. But the aura of Ganesh Chaturthi feels incomplete without a cute Ganesh idol that gives an aesthetic appeal to our home. So, this Ganesh Chaturthi explores an exclusive collection of idols and figurines on iTokri.

Ganpati Bappa, Moriya!
